AYLESBURY DOG CLUB CELEBRATES!

Saturday 5th April 2008 saw the annual dinner and presentation night of the Aylesbury German Shepherd Dog Training Club.  This year the event, held at Weston Turville Golf Club.

Founder and president  of the club, Ken Plaster,  was presented last year with a Waterford crystal vase, inscribed to commemorate the occasion  It was in 1967 whilst running another club that Ken decided to begin a training club dedicated solely to the breed of German Shepherd Dogs.  A few people scoffed at the idea saying he would never get enough dogs to make the club viable, yet within its first year the club had proved so popular that it had outgrown its venue and moved to a larger hall.  Two years later, in 1970, after increasing membership the club relocated to the Wendover Memorial Hall where it has remained to this present time.

During these years the club has seen literally hundreds of dogs pass through its doors and has many success stories of handlers with problematic dogs seeking out Ken’s help, often as a last chance; the latest of these travelling from as far away as Peterborough, such is the reputation of Ken and the club.

In addition to the regular Monday evening sessions there has in the past been a very popular display team, ‘The Ambassadors’, showing the breeds skill at agility, obedience and for entertainment value trick skills.

The club has a friendly atmosphere and hosts social events such as a summer barbeque and rounders match, quiz nights  and much fun for dog and handler alike is the Christmas party packed full of obedience themed games – it should be said the dogs could teach the handlers a thing or two about obedience at these games!
